2. The New York City Public School Teachers' Strike

The New York City Public School Teachers’ Strike was a series of walkouts that occurred in the United States and Canada on January 1, 2022. It is the second major teacher strike by public school teachers in New York City since 2022. The first was in February 2022.
The strike came at the end of an intense week-long battle between teachers and the Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, over the city's new curriculum. The Strike may be over but it is far from over as some right wing politicians have been trying to use it to further their own agenda.
The strike began on January 1 with a large rally that drew thousands of people to Times Square and resulted in an action called "Carry That Weight" (a reference to a line from The Godfather). Some teachers walked out early. Teachers were told they would not receive their full pay for nine days but would make up for it if they were absent for two weeks or more (and would receive two extra weeks if they were absent for five weeks or more).
Most teachers did not participate as they felt that their demands were not being met by the mayor's administration, which has responded by replacing nearly every teacher on its rolls with substitutes.
Teachers' union leaders claimed that de Blasio was actively seeking to undermine the professional autonomy of teachers by forcing them onto city-run buses and private cars, rather than using public transportation and a carpool system like those offered by most other school districts in New York State and around the nation – which are used by most students.
The Mayor has denied these claims, saying that his administration is "doing everything we can to help our public schools succeed."

3. University of California's Admissions Scandal

I don’t know if it’s because I was born in the year 2030, but at least my life has gotten a lot easier.
Maybe that’s why I didn’t feel like celebrating…
My mother used to make me happy by telling me stories of my father, who died while fighting in World War II. One day, she said to me, “You were meant to be happy after he was gone.”
I thought she was talking about something else. Then she said, “I just can’t wait for your birthday! Let’s go visit his grave!”
What a delightful surprise. My mother always had a way of making people happy. She would say things like this to bring them closer to her heart and soul.
The day we visited his grave, I saw the graveside reading: “On this day of the month my children were born and one by one passed away for love and war… All that is best in the world has vanished from sight on the battlefield but there is still hope… The lonely soldier waiting alone on an island is not alone at all because love will always be waiting for us too…. With friendship and hope these are the words my children wrote so long ago as they lay dying on battlefields far away from me…. There is no one who will not be kind in time of need…. There are those who return home victorious but some never come back at all… And those who do come back find themselves very far from home…. The future of humanity lies with you and your children who have become so much older than they really are… We must not lose sight of this fact when we are faced with new challenges….. A new dawn will break….. The future of humanity lies with you and your children.."
My father told me that these words were also written by people he knew during World War II. He said that these words came from his father who fought in Italy during World War II. My mother filled me with these memories as I grew up and told them to anybody who would listen — making sure that everybody became aware of what happened during World War II — especially because it had been more than 70 years since it happened.

4. New U.S. Education Secretary's Budget Proposal

It’s been a long time since I’ve been on the internet. The year 2021 was very eventful as many new educational initiatives took place including the U.S. Education Secretary, Betsy DeVos, traveling to China for a three-day visit to promote American educational interests.
But this is not the first time she has visited that nation. Back in 2000, then-Secretary of Education Rod Paige visited China and signed agreements with the country's education ministry; this included an agreement that the Chinese government would not make any changes to the textbooks in its schools without approval from UNESCO, a United Nations agency responsible for safeguarding human rights.
The agreement was only ratified after Paige's visit, despite objections from China's Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs
